A Two-Year-Old Promise, Finally Kept

Apple officially released iOS 27 to users worldwide on September 14, and the star of this update is unambiguous: Siri AI. Ever since Apple Intelligence was announced in 2024, the promise of a “smarter Siri” has been written and rewritten for two years, with multiple delays along the way. Now it has finally arrived as a public beta. The new Siri is no longer just a voice tool for setting timers — it is a genuine AI assistant that can converse, understand what’s on your screen, and read your personal data.

The most dramatic detail is what’s underneath: according to TechCrunch’s hands-on reporting, the new Siri is built on Google’s Gemini models, rather than being purely homegrown or leaning on the older ChatGPT integration. Apple and Google — longtime rivals — going deep on AI cooperation is itself one of the biggest tech stories of the week. For users, the practical meaning is simple: Siri can finally chat with you the way ChatGPT or Gemini does, and because it lives at the operating-system level, it can directly act across apps and settings on your device.

Four Core Capabilities of Siri AI

TechCrunch writer Ivan Mehta, after months on both the developer and public betas, put it plainly: “I’m actually using Siri again” — high praise indeed for an assistant most people had given up on. Across early reviews, Siri AI’s core capabilities include:

  • Conversational Q&A: multi-turn follow-up questions and dialogue on par with ChatGPT-class assistants.
  • Personal Context: Siri can pull from your files, messages and email — for example, finding a delivery conversation and drafting the return message for you.
  • On-screen Awareness: looking at World Cup lineups, you can ask “who is the oldest player on the pitch”; browsing a startup’s website, you can have Siri look up its funding and competitors.
  • Camera integration: ask questions about what’s in your viewfinder — photograph a coffee bag and ask for the best brewing method, or a restaurant sign and ask for menu recommendations.

Siri AI also gets a dedicated app for revisiting past conversations, with options to change its voice and expressiveness in Settings. Apple has reserved interfaces for third-party app cooperation, and once developers update their apps, the handoff between Siri and apps will be the next thing to watch.

Three Big Limitations: Waitlist, Daily Limits, No EU

The rollout, however, comes with caveats. First, Siri AI ships as a beta and requires waitlist registration: after upgrading to iOS 27, go to Settings → Siri and tap “Try Siri AI (Beta)” to join; access is being granted in waves. Second, there are daily usage limits — heavy users may hit the wall, and that is no accident: according to Yahoo Finance, Apple is planning a paid Siri AI tier that would turn heavy AI usage into a new Services revenue stream.

The third limitation is the sharpest: the EU is left out for now. Amid Digital Markets Act disputes, Siri AI will not launch in the European Union in this first wave. Ironically, the same regulation drives a plot twist — as ExtremeTech reports, iOS 27 and macOS 27 will let users swap Siri AI out for Claude or other third-party models entirely, because the DMA requires Apple to give third parties effective access to iOS features reserved for its own services. CNET, citing a leaked build, reports Siri AI will integrate deeply with ChatGPT and Claude, with certain tasks routed automatically and third-party models even able to replace Siri altogether. Apple’s AI world is about to turn from a one-brand shop into a model marketplace.

What Else iOS 27 Brings

Beyond Siri AI, iOS 27 is a substantial release in its own right. Photos gains “reframe” and “extend” editing tools while the eraser leaves fewer artifacts; Liquid Glass design gets a customization slider; Screen Time is redesigned with new child safety controls; and Maps, password suggestions and location sharing are all polished. For automation fans, the highlight is natural-language Shortcuts — describe what you want (“show me today’s to-dos every morning at 8 a.m.”) and iOS builds the shortcut for you, lowering the barrier to vibe-coding your own phone.

On security, iOS 27 patches more than 120 vulnerabilities, some of which could allow attackers to install malware or steal sensitive data — reason enough on its own to update. Apple simultaneously pushed iOS 26.7 / iPadOS 26.7 / macOS 26.7 for users staying on the previous version, patching nearly 80 vulnerabilities and adding AirPods Max 2 support and new emoji.

Compatibility and How to Upgrade

Devices left behind by iOS 27 include the iPhone X, XR, XS, XS Max and iPhone SE (2nd generation); on the iPad side, the iPad (8th generation), iPad mini (5th generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation) and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation) are out; and macOS 27 (Golden Gate) drops the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020), 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), iMac (2020) and Mac Pro (2019).

Some users are seeing both iOS 27 and iOS 26.7 offered at the same time and finding it confusing. The rule is simple: if your device is compatible, take 27; if not, 26.7 is all you’ll see. The path is Settings → General → Software Update. After upgrading, don’t forget to register for the Siri AI waitlist in Settings → Siri — French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support is expected in October.

Conclusion: Apple’s AI Counterattack Starts with Admitting It Fell Behind

iOS 27 is more than an OS release — it is Apple’s formal answer to two years of AI lag: if homegrown models can’t keep up, borrow Google’s; if a closed ecosystem no longer works, open the door to third-party models. For users, that’s good news — once Siri can be swapped for Claude, the AI assistant race finally returns to the experience itself. If your device qualifies, upgrade soon, join the waitlist, and judge for yourself how smart this “new classmate who arrived two years late” really is.

At the All-In Summit on September 14, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang took a surprise live call from President Trump, who dismissed AI risk warnings as “all a hoax,” claimed slowdown advocates are “playing into the hands of China,” and called data centers “the oil of the next 20, 25 years.” Huang agreed even as he praised a resigned Anthropic researcher’s courage. Markets shrugged: Nvidia fell about 3% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 5.9%.

Musk’s Starmind: SpaceX to Launch Nvidia-Powered Orbital AI Data Centers in 2027 — One Million Are the End Goal

Elon Musk says he is “highly confident” SpaceX will launch Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 AI computers into orbit next year, kicking off the Starmind orbital data center program. The first satellite, AI1, stands 20 meters tall with a 70-meter wingspan, with significant scale targeted by 2028 and up to one million orbital data centers envisioned long term. Experts, however, warn that cooling, radiation, data transfer and rapid chip obsolescence could push real scale into the 2030s.
